Hier ein The­ma, bei dem die Mei­n­un­gen so richtig auseinan­der gehen.

Heißt es:

• ‘red, white, and blue’ oder ‘red, white and blue’?
• ‘Berlin, Paris, or Madrid’ oder ‘Berlin, Paris or Madrid’?

In “The Ele­ments of Style” schreibt Strunk:

“In a series of three or more terms with a sin­gle con­junc­tion, use a com­ma after each term except the last. (…) This is also the usage for the Gov­ern­ment Print­ing Office and of the the Oxford Uni­ver­si­ty Press”.

Allerd­ings: “The Ele­ments of Style” wurde erst­mals in 1920 veröf­fentlicht und mag in diesem Punkt nicht mehr die aktuelle (nor­damerikanis­che) Prax­is reflek­tieren.
